I have a few suggestions involving the 'playing hours' function that is currently only available for fast turn-based games. I think allowing at least one of these options would greatly improve my enjoyment of longer games like Terra Mystica.
1. Allow choosing playing hours for turn-based games with 3-4 moves per day.
In turn-based games with 3 or 4 moves per day, it can easily happen that the players' timezones don't match up. This makes it harder to fit in 4 moves per person, and it can also create pressure or annoyances. Having set playing hours (where the timer stops in the night) would fix this problem.
Example: I'm in one game where I'm constantly 'late' to play my turn because the other players take their turn right after I go to bed. Even though my timer doesn't run out completely, it does make me feel under pressure, and it encourages me to be online in the evening when I would prefer to reduce my screen time at these hours.
2. Add a shorter time frame option for fast turn-based games
In fast turn-based games, you can select your preferred playing hours, but you can only choose between various 12-hour-long time periods. Fast turn-based would appeal to me much more if we could specify a shorter time period (like a few hours) in which to play.
Why I want this: 12 hours is a very long period to constantly check BGA in case it's my turn at the game. It would be nice to know when to be online without having to interact a lot in the chat. It would also be nice to know at what times other players will NOT be playing, so that I won't be tempted to check for updates. This way, I can relax and turn off my computer until the next day.
3. Real-time games that automatically switch to turn-based after a certain time
For longer games, I'd love to have a game option where it starts as real-time, but after an hour (or some other set time) it switches to turn-based. I know you can ask the other players to switch the game to turn-based, but I mean something where all players know this beforehand. -

This would be especially useful when combined with faster turn based playing hours. boardgamearena.com/bug?id=73527
When I create a turn-based table, I always wonder, why can I only set playing hours for "Fast turn-based" but not the slower turn-based speeds. I don't see the rationale for the existing system.
And I often think to myself, there's a certain four-hour window that I'll have BGA open, and if we don't finish the game in those four hours, I'll be available again at the same time tomorrow. Why can't I set the playing hours for that four-hour period? Why does can it only be 12 hours?
(And sometimes it might be useful to have playing hours longer than 12 hours too. For example, if you sleep for 8 hours and check BGA frequently when you're awake.)
This suggestion was originally intended for "simple" games, I believe, but it applies to tournaments as well.

I see the main problem here that how would match-making occur so that people will be in a type of playing hours which are acceptable to them, and on the other hand not implement a system where matching is exceedingly rare?
Currently, for playing hours there are 24 options (12 hour timespan starting on any hour of the day). If we had, say, 4, 6 and 8 hour time windows (which would suit me much better than 12-hour time windows!) - then we need to multiply the 24hours with the number of time window lengths. It is possible the feature could become useless since players would not find any suitable matches (easier to find a match from the pool with 24 options than, say, 96 options...).
We could have a flexibility option for both starting and ending time (or, say, only gibe starting time and length of the time window). But how would the felixibility option work? How would the UI be made? Maybe with a range of options to choose from?
Also, I agree the playing hours options should **NOT** be hidden when choosing a slower-paced game. This is (probably) the cause of bug #57379.
